This Month October 2009 - Wednesday, 30 Sep 2009
I did enjoy the September sunshine but the garden needed rain and we certainly don’t expect to have to water pots at that time of year, as long as it hasn’t lulled us into a false sense of security and we are not prepared in case of an early frost. However I was pleased to be able to mow later in the year than usual. Now it is the autumn tidy time and all the herbaceous should be done and start the pruning. I am still thinking about new projects but that will depend on energy levels, the way I feel at the moment it is as much as I can do to put fingers to keys, I need a tonic and mum does keep telling me I should have brimstone and treacle, I think I prefer the my tonic with a Gin in it. We have got a few new plants though these are mostly herbaceous and woodland perennials. Mum was tempted with a Gentian which is not very suited to our garden so we will keep it in a pot. We did succumb to just a few shrubs and small trees and then had the difficult job of trying to shoe-horn them in but I am afraid I can’t resist when I see something unusual. I made some plum wine but only had bread yeast and it rather frothed out of the top of the airlock on top of the demijohn, the proof of the pudding as they say…. I am also making Damson wine and this year for the 1st time beetroot as we had an excellent crop, I don’t know what it will taste like. For those groups who are thinking about next years outings Moors Meadow is a great place to visit on any day or evening and groups also receive an included introductory talk by the Head Gardener. Our new resident Artist Blacksmith is settling in and creating some amazing pieces, Josh won several awards during his training and will make anything from the functional to the purely decorative for house and garden whether it is from a customers specifications or one of his own ingenious ideas.
